Diving in Spain

Briefly there are 3 legal requirements to scuba dive in Murcia:

  1. You must be over 16 - more info.
  2. You must be medically fit to dive - more info.
  3. You must have valid diving accident insurance - more info.

Minimum age

Spanish Law states you must be over 16 years of age to engage in scuba diving activities in Spain.  Some autonomous regional governments have passed their own laws to relax this limit - but you must still be over 16 to dive in Murcia.

Medical

If you are already certified and just want to dive with us, we’ll ask you to complete the standard RSTC (PADI) medical statement before you dive.  As per normal procedure, if you answer ‘no’ to all the questions - no problem.  If the honest answer to any question is ‘yes’, please have a medical examination (for your own safety) and get your doctor to complete and sign his section of the form before you come to dive.

If you want to enrol on a certification course (Open Water Diver, Advanced / Adventure Diver etc), local law in Murcia states that you must have a diving medical.  There are two options for this:

1.       In your home country.  Complete and sign the PADI medical statement (we can provide a copy of this on request).  Then get a doctor to check your fitness and complete the physician's section of the statement.

2.       In Spain.  Get a Spanish diving medical certificate, we can give you details of where to go for a while-u-wait medical in the La Manga area and when. The doctors fee is around 30€, the certificate costs 4€ - total cost about 34€..

Insurance

The law in Murcia requires that you carry personal diving insurance which covers you for accidents while scuba diving. We include this in the price of our courses.  If you just want to dive, but don't have insurance, we can arrange it for you. We work with Diveassure, who offer daily, weekly, monthly and annual insurance at a reasonable cost (2007 prices 5, 10, 15, 35€ respectively).  If you have your own insurance, please check with your insurers regarding cover while diving in Spain.  Spanish law (though no-one enforces it) states that divers must have a medical examination every two years.  Diveassure cover is valid in Spain for self-certification - eg if you have completed the RSTC medical statement.

Booking Diving Courses and Diving Trips

If you want to enrol on one of our PADI certification courses, please book at least 2-3 days in advance - this will give us time to brief you on the course and you time to prepare properly (medical, id photographs and independent study - which forms an important part of all PADI diving courses).  If you book well in advance, we can get the manuals to you at your home address and you can complete the independent study there.  Contact us now to discuss your booking.

For diving trips, entrance to the Isla Hormigas marine reserve is restricted.  We have permission to dive the reserve, but permits are granted by diver by day and the situation can change at short notice.  Please book early with us if you want to maximise your chance of diving the reserve.  Contact us now to discuss your booking.
